New Beginnings…
Why start a publishing company? The cliché answer would be “why not?” But this decision to completely change careers (again) has so much more behind it than a flippant “why not?” can encompass. In all honesty, I feel that this decision has been inevitable, and I have been slowly and unknowingly building towards it my entire life.
From as young as I can possibly remember, I have always loved books. And this has never stopped. I have bookshelves overflowing with texts from any genre imaginable, plus stacks around the house of more books because I have simply run out of room. Yes, I have a Kindle. But it does not create in me the same desire as a physical book. The smell, the feel of the pages, the crack of the spine - none of this can be replicated on my Kindle (although it does come in handy when I’m traveling). I am the tourist who insists on going to any bookstore when in a foreign city, just to take a deep breath and enjoy the aroma of printed pages. So it seems inevitable that I would eventually, somehow, move into a career based on books.
Another key passion of mine that has led me to this endeavor is the joy I get from helping others and seeing them achieve their goals and dreams. The thought that I could help a developing author find their voice and ultimately see their words in print on a shelf fills me with excitement. I am grateful to find myself in a position to offer such a service to those who need it. So, when it came time to start thinking about my next career move, publishing seemed like the right decision.
It is scary to go out on your own and start something new. I am learning every day as I work to build this company, and enjoying every moment of it. I feel like I have gone through the proverbial magic wardrobe and entered a whole new world. It is magical and overwhelming and full of possibilities. I am exploring and navigating and finding new adventures at every turn. It is an exciting journey and I am curious to see where it all leads.
